Devotions

Growing in Faith Every Day

Faith is not limited to Sunday mornings. In the Lutheran tradition, devotion is the practice of spending intentional time with God through Scripture, prayer, reflection, and listening for God’s promises in our daily lives.

Devotions provide opportunities to pause, refocus, and remember that God’s grace is present not only in worship, but also in the ordinary moments of life.

Whether you have five minutes or an hour, personal devotion can help strengthen your faith, encourage your spirit, and deepen your relationship with God.

What Is a Devotion?

A devotion is a time set aside for spiritual reflection. While devotions can take many forms, they often include:

  • Reading a passage of Scripture
  • Prayer
  • Reflection on God’s Word
  • A brief message or meditation
  • Quiet time with God

For Lutherans, devotions are not about earning God’s favor or proving our faith. Rather, they are a way to receive God’s gifts through Scripture, prayer, and the promises of Christ.

Devotions from St. Matthew’s

Our devotion videos offer encouragement and faith-filled reflections throughout the week.

Topics may include:

  • Scripture readings and reflections
  • Seasonal devotion series
  • Prayer and spiritual practices
  • Encouragement during difficult times
  • Lutheran perspectives on faith and daily living

These short messages are designed to help you stay connected to God’s Word wherever you are.

Faith Beyond Sunday

Devotions can be a meaningful part of your daily routine.

You might choose to:

  • Begin your morning with prayer and Scripture
  • Read a devotion during lunch or a break
  • End the day with reflection and thanksgiving
  • Share a devotion with your family
  • Follow a seasonal devotion during Advent or Lent

Even a few moments spent with God’s Word can bring comfort, perspective, and hope.

God’s Grace for Every Day

Life is busy, and faith journeys are rarely perfect. Devotions are not about checking a box or following a rule. They are an opportunity to slow down, hear God’s promises again, and remember a central Lutheran truth:

God’s love is a gift, God’s grace comes first, and Christ is with us every day.

Wherever you are in your faith journey, we invite you to spend time in God’s Word and discover the encouragement, peace, and hope that come from walking with Him daily. As always at St. Matthew’s Church: ALL ARE WELCOME!

Philippians 1:6
β€œHe who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

We Are Reconciling in Christ

We believe that when we say all are welcome to Christ’s table, that all are in fact welcome, no matter their race, ethnicity, nationality or who they love.
